Awesome to read the comments on here! Germaine Greer never told anyone 'the way it should be' except that women should have a life of their own. I agree, the answer lies in the middle. What I don't understand is why our media always makes this a female issue: The woman can either work and run the house, or run the house. What about the men?! In reality, men should and generally do, help out in the home, especially if both partners work. Its just common sense and adult responsibility. If a woman decides to stay home, what matters is why she decides to. If its a positive choice for herself, awesome. But if she gives up on a fulfilling career because it its too hard to do that and ALL the domestic duties, surely thats negative. As for the arguement for staying true to 'nature', all I can say is nature gave me a brain, and I need to use it! Thank goodness for feminists like Germaine Greer - how restricted would our lives be without them? As for blaming them for anything? What a cop out! -

I absolutely agree with Germaine Greer that women ought to have choices and have self respect and demand respect from their spouse. My family travel worldwide as hubby and myself are from different countries and we live in the US - neither of our home countries. I have chosen to be a home mum because my husband works away a lot. I feel I give our family the sense of stability, but I absolutely would not accept hubby 'telling' me what my 'housekeeping' is for the week. What he earns is ours equally. I teach my child a lot, and take him swimming and to gymnastics and the house is orderly and the food is terrific. Hubby has said he'd love to someday be the home person so he could spend more time with the family and I'd be more than happy with that -

As always the answer is in the middle, we are talking about the period of your life where you are raising children. That would be a 20 - 25 year period dependant on the number of children you have. If you wish to work before, during or after this it is the persons choice. Germaine as well as others who tell us "THIS IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE" need to realise that they dont have all the answers and that it is the decision of couple as to what arrangement works for them AT THAT PARTICULAR TIME. -

As Germaine greer said: women want a life - not necessaily a "career" - Women have to find what works for them - what Germaine did is fight for women to have more choices. As a working mom I do agree it is not possible to "have it all - as something will suffer - either your work or your kids - Women should never give up who they are though - by doing so they show great disrespect for how hard feminists fought for things they take for granted now. Say no to LASH-BATTING - I love you germaine! -
